Many clients paid substantial AMT in 2024 and expected to recover it in 2025. For most, that recovery did not happen.
The reality is more difficult.
The 2024 changes broadened the AMT base, raised the rate to 20.5% flat, and cut available credits. Capital gains are now 100% included. Interest expense and investment counsel fees are allowed at 50%. For investment-heavy clients, AMT can often exceed regular tax - and without active strategies, the carryforward balance compounds year over year until it becomes a permanent tax increase.
Every dollar sits in a carryforward account. Against the right income in the right year, it comes back as a reduction in tax payable, or in some cases, a refund.
